We've seen Romeo Ferraris tune all manner of vehicles, but oddly none from the automaker with which it shares the first part of its name. That's all changing, but not with a current Alfa Romeo model. For their latest project, RF has turned its attention to the recently discontinued Alfa Romeo Brera.

Long considered one of the most beautiful designs mired by a substandard chassis, the Brera went out of production over a year ago. But to give it one last swan song, Romeo Ferraris has teamed up with venerable Alfa tuning firm Autodelta. Together, they've given the Brera's 3.2-liter V6 a supercharger, intercooler, custom exhaust and remapped ECU to boost power up by 97 horsepower for a more substantial 353 hp. That's tipped to drop the 0-62 time down to five seconds and the top end up to 162 mph.

Naturally a full body kit is also part of the package, as is an adjustable suspension and (we would hope) upgraded brakes as well. A fitting goodbye to one of the best-looking cars ever to grace the roads – and one that will hopefully keep it on them for years to come.

Most lists of Top 10 All Time Grand Prix Drivers will include familiar names to most F1 fans. Pilots such as Schumacher, Senna,Clark, Prost and Stewart are almost always included, often times with others such as Villeneuve, Peterson, Mansell, Andretti and maybe even a Vettel thrown in for personal measure. Sometimes, however, the authors of such lists go back to the pre-war Grand Prix era and include some of the true all time great road racers. Tazio Nuvolari may well be the best of that lot and can arguably be included as possibly the best racer ever.

Born in Castel d’Ario nearMantuain November of 1892, a full century before some youngsters on the current F1 feeder series ladder, Nuvolari would come to be known as Il Mantovano Volante…the Flying Mantuan. The tiny Italian’s initial foray into racing would be in motorcycles, though his sporting exploits would have to wait. He gained his racing license at the age of 23 in 1915, but WW1 would curtail his speed for a few years. His first race, therefore, did not come until 1920 and, by 1925, he was the 350cc European Motorcycling Champion.

During the 1920s, Tazio was also dabbling in auto racing. One of the great motor racing stories comes from the 1930 Mille Miglia when Nuvolari began the timed event some ten minutes behind Alfa teammate Achille Varzi. A marathon of more than 16 hours which ended at night, Varzi believed that his race was lost when he saw the headlights of his teammate closing fast during the final stages of the event. Moments later, however, his spirits rose when he realized that the lights behind him were gone.

Varzi drove at speed for tens of kilometers, seemingly alone in the darkness until just 30 miles from the end when the blast of another car’s horn tore away any thoughts of victory. Nuvolari had indeed been there all along, traveling at 150kph with headlights switch off, relying solely on his teammate’s tail lights to stay on the road. With his own lights switched back on, Tazio swept by for the lead and eventual victory.

Nuvolari gave up bikes and switched to cars full time in 1931, driving for the factory Alfa Romeo team. 1932 saw Tazio take the European Championship with 2 wins and a 2^nd place in the three races that made up the series. That same year he also won the Monaco GP and a 2^nd successive Tara Florio.

For 1933, however, the factory Alfa squad dropped out of GP racing and Tazio took up with Enzo Ferrari’s privateer Alfa effort. This season did bring another amazing story into racing folklore, as Nuvolari was paired with Le Mansspecialist Raymond Sommer for that year’s 24 hour race. The pair took an early two lap lead, but had to pit with a leaking fuel tank. The hole was plugged with chewing gum (!) and the Alfa was sent back out. Though several more stops were made due to the makeshift repair coming undone, the two eventually won the race by a mere 400 yards.

Having left Alfa for Maserati, Tazio crashed at Alessandriain 1934 while trying to avoid another car, the incident resulting in a broken leg. Bored with hospital life, Nuvolari checked himself out and entered a race at Avus, just four weeks after the accident. With his right leg still in a cast, Tazio had his car set up so that he could control all three pedals with his left foot, coming home eventually in a miraculous 5^th.

In 1935, Tazio was back with Ferrari’s Alfa stable, having once walked out on the team, thanks to prime minister Benito Mussolini, who wanted the Italian star in the best seat possible. Nuvolari originally wanted a drive with the German Auto Union team, but their lead driver, Achille Varzi, refused to have is former teammate driving one of the Silver Arrows.

“At the first bend, I had the clear sensation that Tazio had taken it badly and that we would end up in a ditch; I felt myself stiffen as I waited for the crunch. Instead, we found ourselves on the next straight in perfect position.” – Enzo Ferrari

More than 100hp down in an outdated Alfa Romeo P3, Tazio got his revenge at the Nurburgring that year when he took on the five season dominating Mercedes of Caracciola, Fagiolo, Lang and Baron von Brauchitsch and the four Auto Unions of Varzi, Rosemeyer, Stuck and Pietsch. In front of more than 300,000 fans, including prominent members of the Third Reich, Nuvolari beat the German teams at their home race for his sole victory of the European season.

Between 1927 and 1939, Tazio Nuvolari won no less than 45 Grand Prix and major road races at the wheels of makes such as Bugatti, Alfa, Maserati, and, at Donnington in 1938, Auto Union. During practice for that race, Tazio hit a stag, the head of which he had mounted and hung in his home.

Following WWII, Nuvolari raced in a handful of events, winning his very last race, a hillclimb in Palermo. He suffered a stroke in 1952 which left him partially paralyzed before succumbing to a 2^nd stroke a year later. At his funeral in Mantua, which was attended by tens of thousands of Italian fans, the Flying Mantuan’s coffin was placed on a car chassis and pushed through the city streets by Alberto Ascari, Luigi Villoresi and Juan Manuel Fangio.

Life has had a way of getting in the way in my family especially since July convention time frame. I feel things have now started to settle down. I am sure the rest of you have been extremely busy with you lives and families, too.

I am so looking forward to a few days of R&R coming up Dec 2-4 weekend and hope to see you all at the Clam Digger in Atlantic Beach, NC.

Rick and John have made the arrangements with the hotel and it should be a nice event. Hope to see you all there. Don't forget to bring the gift to exchange and exchange until you get the one you want.

If you thought Formula One racing had a checkered history in America, well – you're right. Over the years, the United States Grand Prix has been held in more locations and has suffered from more hiatuses than a drug addicted musician's touring schedule. But a good portion of that drama has been played out in New York. Upstate, Watkins Glen hosted the United States Grand Prix for longer than any other single location, but the past few decades have also seen efforts to bring an F1 race to New York City.

That idea first came up in the early 80s, but seemed to have gained more traction in recent years. As you may recall, a bid was floated a couple of years ago to build a circuit at Liberty State Park (the piece of New Jersey extending behind the Statue of Liberty), but that failed after local residents protested the idea and the race was awarded instead to the Circuit of the Americas being built in Austin, Texas. Then a new projectcame up that would see an F1 race – backed by private investment instead of public funds – held between the New Jersey municipalities of Weehawken and West New York that would be easily accessible from the city while offering the Manhattan skyline as the backdrop.

The Wall Street Journal now reports that the latter project has been approved and is set to be announced on Tuesday. The report further projects that the race is already scheduled for June 2013, joining the United States Grand Prix already set for Austin on the same calendar.

If that's the way things shake out, it won't be the first time the U.S. plays host to multiple F1 races in the same year, as two American grands prix were commonly held in the 1970s and 80s at such locations as Watkins Glen, Las Vegas, Dallas, Detroit and Long Beach, highlighted by the 1982 Formula One World Championship that actually featured three grands prix in the United States (plus a fourth in Canada).

While those races played with a variety of names, New York Grand Prix sounds about right to us. However the WSJ indicates that the Jersey race could take the name Grand Prix of America, while the Austin race is set to carry the name United States Grand Prix. Whatever they want to call it, F1 racing is poised for a big comeback on American shores.

We will be doing something a little different for this year's holiday party. Starting off first with the location: the Clam Digger Inn at Altantic Beach, NC, near Morehead City. It's farther for the Virginians, but we hope to make it worth your while with a nicer buffet and party room than what we've ever had in Manteo. So let's get to the specifics -

This months "dinner meeting" will be BBQ at Tom's house Sunday afternoon Aug 28 so bring something good to eat and share.

Three or four reasons for this change:

1, Bistro 324 closed for wedding rehearsal dinners on Friday Aug 26 so they had to cancel my planned dinner that night. Just got email yesterday.

2. We are NOW starting our weekend at Wings and Wheels event Saturday Aug 27 from 8 to 4.

3. We are having a Sunday morning F1 breakfast/brunch from 8 to 10:30 am at Azalea Inn Time Out Sports Bar.

4. Grand finale is our summer afternoon BBQ meeting at Tom's house Aug 28.

Hope to see you all at as many of these events as possible.

F1 race fans: This Sunday’s European GP is being rebroadcast on FOX at 12:00 noon (as part of the four races that they do ever year instead of the Speed Channel). I will be at the Azalea Inn/Time Out Sports Bar at that time for an F1 Lunch. Judging by the previous breakfasts we’ve had there, we should still have the place practically to ourselves, but I will make sure we get our normal spot regardless! Formula One Breakfast Kick-Off: May 8th

Attenzione Hampton Roads Race Fans:

The first F1 Breakfast for this year will be this Sunday, May 8th. We are trying out a new breakfast venue, and if things go as planned - we will have an entire sports pub to ourselves to enjoy all the F1 action and be as loud and obnoxious as we want!

The new place is The Azalea Inn Restaurant, 2344 East Little Creek Road, Norfolk. Next door is The Time Out Sports Bar, which they own and is interconnected with the restaurant. This outfit has been around a long time and they just recently started serving breakfast on the weekends, which is pretty decent. They will let us in early at 7:30 am so we can watch the pre-race. They will get us some coffee and will be ready to start serving us breakfast at their normal 8:00 opening time.

I don't normally ask this, but please let me know if you plan on coming so I can give them a head count until they get used to us. Google Map is below, I recommend for Peninsula folks to take the Tidewater drive exit (277 B), take a left and head north, then hang a right onto Little Creek Rd. The Norview exit is your only other real option (Chesapeake Blvd exit sends you in the wrong direction).

Less than a month after the news broke that Zagato was working on a new TZ3 Stradale, the Milanesecarrozzeria has unveiled the first photos and details of its latest creation.

The sumptuous TZ3 Stradale is part of a continuous celebration by Zagato of Alfa Romeo's centenary. So it's based on an Alfa, then? Well, not quite. Its underpinnings are actually much more serpentine than even the snake on the Alfa badge, borrowed as they are from the all-conquering Dodge Viper ACR, over which is draped a bespoke carbon fiber body. You can discern some key Zagato design elements from its similarity to the Perana Z-One (that's no bad thing) and the classic Kamm tail. But while this coachbuilt Viper doesn't borrow any mechanical bits from the marque to which it pays tribute, its design puts a decidedly contemporary spin on decades of collaboration between Zagato and Alfa Romeo.

The fourth model in the TZ line, the Stradale follows the original TZ and TZ2, and the more recent TZ3 Corsawhich was unveiled last year at Villa d'Este – the same location where, as we recently reported, an original TZ is set to cross the auction block. But while the Alfa-powered TZ3 Corsa was a strict one-off track car, the TZ3 Stradale (as previewed in Zagato's Christmas card) will be built in an edition of nine examples.

The first is going to noted American collector Eric King, the second and third examples already earmarked for customers in Japan and Europe. Ask really nicely and maybe one of the remaining six can be yours. Otherwise, you'll have to settle for perusing our high-resolution image gallery below and scoping out the official press release after the jump.

I know it really rained on our wine tour parade this year but, I hope all who were in attendance enjoyed our 16th wine tour as much as I did. My hat's off to all who made it such a smashing success. Many thanks again for all the hard work and time that Dave and Debbie and Betsy and Robin and oh you too Skip have put into these annual tours.

The English Inn staff always comes through for us to enjoy our stay there. Tom Packett and all the folks at IAP made our annual pilgrimage to their parts Mecca another highlight of the weekend, too.

Raining as it did made our first stop at the Glass House Winery really neat as we got to taste wine and enjoy our lunch inside their tropical plant green house. Really nice venue. Driving through the rain to DuCard winery was a nice relaxing drive for me with Skip as navigator. Towards the end of drive when we had to ford the stream running across the road had me a little worried for the return to hotel trip but the rain quit just a we were leaving and the rushing waters across the roads in several places were minor in nature.

I hope Sunday's drive and winery visit was a nice event, too. I opted to make a speed run down I-81 to Christainsburg/Blacksburg area to visit Jim and Anita Wehler and Don and Ev Melia. I went to also service Jim's A/C system on his 164. All of us had a nice visit and cook out at Jim's place.

Monday I drove home and stopped at Natural Bridge for a sightsee I had never done before. Pretty impressive Natural Wonder of the world. Even more wonderful was Route 130 from Natural Bridge across the Blue Ridge to US-29. This is one Alfa Road with twisties to drive for and a view down into the valley along the James River that is spectacular.

For any interested Alfisti arriving in Manteo on Friday or early Saturday - I have put together an itinerary for a drive down the southern Outer Banks. Please be advised: the Outer Banks in December is like Italy in August (not much open). This should still be a fun event as we're not likely to hit any traffic tie-ups, and there's not much room to get lost for that matter!

Here we go:

9:30am - Depart Elizabethan Inn
11:00am - Arrive Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (sorry, can't climb it this time of year)
12:00pm - Lunch in Buxton, NC (Diamond Shoals Restaurant)
1:00pm - Depart for Rodanthe, NC
1:45pm - Arrive at "Nights in Rodanthe" house - (Holiday open house is $20 and all proceeds benefits the Cape Hatteras Cancer Foundation). Staying for the open house is optional and everyone can straggle back to Manteo at their leisure from here.
4:00pm - (No later than) Everyone arrives back at Elizabethan Inn in time for a pre-party nap! :~)

Just a reminder that the MAARC 'OBXMAS' party is this Saturday, December 4th, 7:00 pm at the Elizabethan Inn in Manteo, NC. Hopefully you have your reservations already - Ron gets the head count for the caterer based on how many rooms are listed under the Alfa Romeo Club group rate.

In case this is your first MAARC Holiday party, or like most of us, you forget a lot of stuff, here's how it works:

For those that arrive on Friday, there will be a group dinner event for those interested. Ron has chosen the place and guarantees all the food you can eat up until the restaurant has emptied the freezer for the season. There are also events in downtown Manteo.
Also for Friday and early Saturday arrivers, there will be a group drive on Saturday morning. The drive starts at 9:00am and will go down to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse with stops at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and the 'Nights in Rodanthe' house. Stay tuned for the itinerary to be provided in a separate post.
The party itself starts at 7:00pm at the hotel 'party room' . IT'S BYOB - so bring what you want to drink and something to drink it in. Alfa Babe desserts are also highly encouraged! The Chinese gift exchange is optional, but is the best part of the party. If you wish to participate, bring a wrapped gift of about $10 value. Alfa and car enthusiast related gifts get scrapped over the most, however there have been numerous non car related gifts that have been highly popular in the past, especially with the XX chromosome crowd.
Usually there is some sort of group breakfast effort on Sunday - but that depends on how good a time you had Saturday night!

The menu for our dinner in Manteo will feature the following dishes, prepared by the same excellent caterer (Cheryl Perry) as last year.

Antipasti Salad Platter--Garden lettuce surrounded by bowls of juliene cured meats & cheeses with marinated & pickled veggies. Served with olive oil & roasted red pepper vinagrette.

Slow Braised Cider Pork Loin w/Apples & Leeks--Whole pork loin brined in apple cider then braised slowly until tender. Served on a bed of apple/leek ragu.

Steak Pizzaiola--Last years favorite! Beef steak lightly pounded and tenderized, then stuffed with spinach & garlic and rolled up; simmered and served ina red wine sauce.

Pasta--Farfalle w/Walnuts, Brown butter & Sage--Butter slowly browned until it takes on a nutty flavor, tossed with bow-tie pasta, toasted walnuts and fresh sage. Simple & perfect accompaniment for our entrees.

Side Dish--Roasted Winter Vegetables--Seansoned turnips, carrots, squash etc. oven roasted and dressed with a drizzle of olive oil

The New Kent Winery, which offers a beautiful venue with an expanded show field and many other activities for the family's enjoyment, is also holding a Wine Festival and Tasting in conjunction with the show. Hi, Here is the agenda for the Highlands tour. There is still room for a few more people to join us. If you do I must give you the following warning. This trip will be very bad for your diet. The drives are spectacular and it will get your heart beating faster, so make sure your ticker is in good order, also make sure your brakes and tires are in good order. The views are great, and more importantly if you are your significant other is in need of retail therapy you will come back with less cash.

So here is the agenda

Thursday the 12th
Arrive – No real plans but we are going to have dinner at the “Rib Shack” at around 7pm.

Friday the 13th – yes it is Friday the 13th and hopefully it will be lucky for us.
Eat a very light breakfast if you need to, but not to much.
10am get ready for the drive, leave around 10:15
Lunch around 12:30 at Café Rel in Franklin, NC. The owner chef is a Porsche 356 nut so give him a little ribbing.
A few notes on Café Rel, It is small, it is connect to a gas station, and does not take reservations or credit cards. We will probably have to wait for a table and we will probably be split up. Yes, it is worth the hassle just bring cash.
2pm afternoon drive –
6:30 Dinner at Cyprus

Saturday the 14th the long drive.
This will be the longest day drive, but have a light breakfast.
Leave around 9:30.
Wine tour and waterfall before lunch
Lunch in Clayton Georgia, at Rumour hazit
Drive the boring part through SC.
0.5 mile hike to see waterfall.
Back in Highlands and by around 4:30.
6 PM Dinner at Ristorante Paoletti

Sunday the 15th Drive to Lake Lure
Leave around 10 and drive up to Lake Lure.
Lunch at La Strada in Lake lure.
Stop at Gem store afterwards.
Go home.

Well that is it, throw in a night at the ugly dog bar and perhaps a few other items and you have a complete weekend.

The Itinerary

Each day we will have a driving tour, and on Friday this will be split into 2 different tours returning to Highlands in the middle of the day. In the evening we will always return to the Highlands for dinner. We will also have some surprise visits that are oriented to the car enthusiast. The roads are superb, and designed for the sports car enthusiast.
Having said that we will not visit the Dragons tail this year. This is due to the crowding on the tail. We will visit roads of equal splendor, which will include places such as “The Gorge” and “war women road”. These roads offer scenic views, waterfalls and more curves than you can count.
Lunches and dinners we will dine together at some of my favorite restaurants. I do like to eat and I do like a good restaurant, you will not be disappointed.

The Highlands
The Highlands is a shopping mecca and offers a world class spa at the Old Edwards Inn (OEI). This spa got the first ever perfect score from “Conde Nast” travelers guide and you do not have to be a guest to take advantage of this. If you or your SO want to skip a driving session and be pampered for a day OEI is highly recommended.

So you want to go.
First get a reservation – preferably at the Mitchell, but you choose. Get then NOW as these places will fill up.
Next - Let me know that you are going and how many in your party – This helps in the restaurant reservations.
Finally – Let me know your driving style – If we have a large enough group it helps me sort everyone out.

The groups will be broken down as such:

Nuvolari Group – I am a direct descendent of Tazio Nuvolari and Alberto Ascari.
Roger Goodfellow String back Group – I enjoy a nice drive in the country in a nice sporty car. My speed is limited by how sick I make my significant other.
Flower group – I not only like to stop and smell the roses I like to inspect the bees.
Buddy Palumbo Group – aka Sweeper group – I enjoy a nice drive in the country, and though I am not the fastest I do possess tools, parts, skill, and compassion to fix broken chariots along the way. I always start last.

I purchased this 1987 Milano Platinum from the widow of an old friend, John Hertzman, last year. Many of you may have know him, as he was active in the Alfa community. Though the car only had 39,800 miles on it, I've spent over $5k sorting it out, as it had been sitting for several years and had only been driven about 2000 miles per year before that. Most aspects of the car are excellent, due to non-use. Also, due to non-use, the primary problem area was the fuel injection system. The car is now running great. I would prefer to keep it, but really want to put the money from this car into the restoration of my 73 GTV, which otherwise will have to wait. Following is the verbage from its recent listing on eBay. It didn't meet my reserve, but now I'm selling it straight out and would like to get $5500. I've driven the car daily without any problems and it now has 49,000 miles on it.

In fact, I drove him to Atlanta in 1987 to pick the car up when it was new. Black exterior (excellent condition), gray suede interior (excellent condition), NEW: Pirelli P6s (now have 10k on them), clutch, rear motor mount, ball joints, fuel pump, ECT sensor, ignition wires, front brake pads and right front caliper, heater blower, timing belt.

Issues: Three, small rust spots: 1. Lower front of rt. rear wheel well (see photo…this is the worst spot), 2. Lower corner of left tail light, 3. Lower rear of left. rear wheel well; gas guage inaccurate; sun roof raises, but does not fully slide back; headliner is a little loose.

AROC Convention Drive

The AROC Annual Meeting in Frederick, MD is hardly a month away. As many of you are aware, MAARC is planning a pre-convention drive that will begin on Tuesday, June 22nd and we will arrive in Frederick on Wednesday afternoon, June 25th. The rough itinerary is as follows – some fine tuning still to come, but I have routed us over some great roads.

Tuesday June 22nd
- Lunchtime Rendezvous at Cooper Vineyards, Louisa, VA (box lunches $10 each)
- Taste Cooper Vineyards Wines

- Drive back roads to Rappahannock Vineyards along scenic by-ways), Rt. 33 to Rt. 231 to Rt. 211/522 thru Sperryville to Rappahannock Vineyards.

- Taste Rappahannock Vineyards Wines

- Drive back roads to Hampton Inn Warrenton
- Dinner at restaurant in Warrenton - TBD

Wednesday June 23rd
- Breakfast/Check out

- Drive back roads through The Plains, Middleburg and Purcellville to Breaux Vineyards
- Taste Breaux Vineyards wines

- Drive to Harpers Ferry, W VA and walk around the historic town

Final leg of drive to Frederick, MD (direct and fairly short)
